Excessive Heat Safety Tips & Cooling Centers

 With dangerously high levels of heat forecast across the state of Illinois in the coming days, including heat index forecasts approaching 100 degrees, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is warning Illinoisans to take preventive actions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Exposure to extreme heat, and especially prolonged exposure, can cause serious health complications, including heat exhaustion and heatstroke, IDPH officials said. The Department urges Illinoisans to take precautions and protect themselves, their families, and their pets from overheating and heat-related illnesses. This is critically important for very young children, people who are pregnant, and those who are older. Public health officials also remind Illinoisans to check on the well-being of vulnerable people who live alone without air conditioning.
Locally, the following locations are available for cooling shelters:
YMCA Lobby – 1324 W. Carl Sandburg Dr., Galesburg
HOURS: Wednesday through Friday: 5:00 am to 8:00 pm, Saturday: 6:00 am to 3:00 pm

Knox County Housing Authority Shelter – 525/527 Iowa Court, Galesburg
HOURS: Daily, 6:00 pm to 7:00 am

East Galesburg Fire Station – 411 S. State St., East Galesburg
24 hours through Saturday

Oneida Fire Station – 210 N. Sage St. Oneida
HOURS: 24 hours through Saturday

Wataga Fire Station – 310 W. Willard St. Wataga
HOURS: 24 hours through Saturday

You can protect yourself from heatstroke and heat exhaustion with these basic steps:

  1. Stay in an air-conditioned area during the hottest hours of the day. If you don’t have air conditioning in your home, go to a public place such as a shopping mall or a library to stay cool. Or check for cooling centers at the Keep Cool Illinois website.
  2. Wear light, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, as it reflects heat and sunlight.
  3. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water often and don’t wait until you are thirsty.
  4. Avoid beverages that can dehydrate you like those that contain caffeine or alcohol.
  5. Avoid unnecessary hard work or activities if you are outside or in a building without air-conditioning, especially during times of peak heat (10 am – 4 pm)
  6. Avoid unnecessary sun exposure. When in the sun, wear a hat, preferably with a wide brim.
  7. Slow down. Strenuous activities should be reduced, eliminated, or rescheduled to the coolest time of the day. Those at risk should stay in the coolest available place, not necessarily indoors.

Here are some symptoms of heatstroke to look out for:

  1. Body temperature over 103 degrees Fahrenheit
  2. Difficulty breathing
  3. An elevated heart rate
  4. Skin hot to the touch
  5. Feeling dizziness, nausea or disorientation

If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, call 911 immediately. While you are waiting for medical assistance, you can use ice packs on the neck and underarms and drink cool water to lower your body temperature.

Avoiding Sunburn: This is the time of year when ultraviolet (UV) rays are strongest and can cause severe sunburn. It is important to protect your skin, especially if you are prone to developing skin cancer. To avoid sunburn, wear sunscreen of SPF30 or higher. Also wear protective clothing, including long-sleeved shirts, long pants and a wide-brimmed hat, especially when the UV index is over 6.

Heat can also adversely affect the health of pets. To keep your pets safe:

  1. Never leave your pet in a parked car – they can suffer from heat-related illness too.
  2. Provide plenty of fresh water for your pets and leave the water in a shady area.
