Monmouth-Roseville High School has a new man in charge of the boys basketball program…..sort of. 2018 IBCA Hall of Famer and Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys basketball coach for 16 years, Chuck Grant is back on the Titan sidelines. Grant, who stepped down from the position following the covid-pandemic season in 2021, is taking over for Jake Sottos. A varsity assistant and JV coach on Grant’s staff during the latter portion of his first go-round, Sottos was named the varsity head coach before the 2021-2022 school year. In his 3 years, Sottos won 48 games, going (15-18) this past school year. Sottos, who chose to step down following the season due to increased time commitments with his day-job, will be a volunteer assistant for Coach Grant.
Before Sottos’ time with the Titans, Grant was the only head coach the Titan boys basketball program had known, as he was the man in charge when the Monmouth and Roseville school districts consolidated in 2005. Grant will bring 461 varsity boys basketball coaching wins with him when the season starts in November. 294 of those were garnered with Monmouth-Roseville, with the rest as a part of the Roseville and Monmouth High Schools prior to the joining of the districts.
Grant said when he stepped away in 2021, the coaching fire was still there but with the covid pandemic at its height, it seemed like a good time to hang it up. Now, with the pandemic in the rear-view mirror and with Coach Sottos having to step down, Grant’s desire to get back on the sidelines was too much to avoid.
The Titan boys took part in the MDS Boys Basketball Shootout at Monmouth College this past weekend, going (4-1). The Titans will begin the 2024-2025 season at the Orion Charger 10 & 32 Tipoff Classic during the week of Thanksgiving.
