24 kindergarten through 12th grade teachers from all over the country have made their way to Monmouth College for a two-week Ancient Olympics and Daily Life in Ancient Olympia Hand-On History workshop. Co-Director of the workshop, Nathalie Roy, who is a teacher from Louisiana, shares the daily routine:
“Bob Simmons instructs us on a particular Olympic event and then we go outside to actually try out the techniques that he has discussed, that is where the hands-on history comes in, we are actually doing the things the way the ancient people would have done. Then we come back into the classroom for more instruction. Then the evenings are spent doing research because at the end of this institute it will culminate in some projects that each of our teachers have put together; things they have learned and researched in the past two weeks that they can bring back and use with their students at their schools.”
The Ancient Olympics and Daily Life in Ancient Olympia Hands-On History workshop at Monmouth College is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
