Through the Warren County Health Department, a Lead Case management Program for children five and under, not only tracks lead levels in the home, but also tracks recalls on food, toys, and even clothing, reports Administrator Jenna Link:

“When we first started that program, the maximum cutoff action level where we would get involved in case management was 10. A few years ago, through CDC recommendations they dropped that down to 5 and in January of next year that will go down to 3.5, so we anticipate that our case load is going to increase quite a bit. We talk about sources of lead, maybe lead paint in a home if you are doing renovations, keep an eye on windowsills. As that paint ages, it starts to crack and chip and then it can be in dust, but we are also seeing it in food products. Last November, there was a recall issued for the to go applesauce pouches with cinnamon and so know we have had a lot of recalls of cinnamon. We always share those FDA recalls on our Facebook page. The elevated lead in children can cause developmental issues.”
