The West Central Heat open up their 5th season of 8-man football on Friday night with a game at Galva High School. The Heat won the 8-man state title in 2022 but fell below .500 last fall at (3-6). West Central head coach Jason Kirby said on the Wednesday WRAM Morning Show that this year’s upperclassmen have had that on their minds all off-season and enter the 2024 with a little chip on their shoulder.

The Heat open up their 2024 campaign with a road game at Galva. That starts a highly unusual run of five straight away games to open the year. West Central will be at home for the final four games on their regular season schedule. Kirby has been a huge part of the growth of 8-man football across the state, serving on the 8-man football committee for the last several years. I asked Kirby on the Morning Show how the impact of 8-man football is progressing.
