Western Illinois University Athletics is pleased to announce the formal launch of Leatherneck Legends, an exclusive new major gift society benefiting WIU student-athletes. This new major gift initiative, which is specifically focused on increasing annual commitments to athletics, was created to inspire philanthropy and recognize some of Leatherneck Athletics’ most generous athletics donors.

Through generous commitments of $25,000 or more, this impactful group of donors provides critical financial support needed to recruit and retain elite student-athletes and coaches. As the first Ohio Valley Conference school to launch a major gift society, this philanthropic initiative positions WIU to be a leader in the conference.

“Philanthropic gifts are more important to our program than ever before,” said Director of Athletics Paul A. Bubb. “These long-term commitments from donors help us to plan better, as we can count on those gifts to advance and enhance our athletic program.”

The Founding Circle members of Leatherneck Legends are a group of visionary donors who have played a crucial role in launching this new initiative. By providing significant, early-stage financial support, these initial eight commitments (listed below) have helped to establish the foundation for long-term impact and growth.

While Leatherneck Legends is focused on philanthropy, members will enjoy unique stewardship opportunities focused on deeper, more meaningful engagement with WIU Athletics.

These opportunities may include, but are not limited to:

  • VIP event invitations;
  • Unique team experiences;
  • Advanced season ticket purchase;
  • Preferred athletic event parking;
  • Hall of Fame room hospitality access for basketball;
  • Touchdown Terrace hospitality access for football;
  • Post-season ticket priority;
  • And more!

“We are thrilled to officially introduce the Leatherneck Legends major gift society to our donors and alumni,” said Assistant Athletic Director for Development Dr. Tayler Onion. “Members of this prestigious group will help to set Leatherneck student-athletes up for long-term success, and I am personally grateful to the eight in our founding circle for helping us to get this new initiative off the ground!”

As the premier group of the Leatherneck Club, Leatherneck Legends includes donors who make philanthropic commitments of $25,000 or more over the course of five years. The areas of support for these cash commitments includes: capital projects, athletic endowments, facility enhancements, and unrestricted funds.

All commitments made prior to Dec. 31, 2024, will be considered Founding Circle members and begin enjoying benefits immediately during the 2024-25 academic year.
