The United Red Storm football team traveled to Abingdon to take on the Abingdon-Avon Tornados on Friday, October 4th to try and spoil Homecoming weekend, but end up falling short despite a second half comeback surge.
United won the toss and elected to receive the ball to start the game but would turn the ball over despite two penalties by the Tornados. The first quarter went back and forth before A-Town converted on an 11-yard passing touchdown play to go up 6-0.
The second quarter began with A-Town having the ball but Zeke Clark had his second interception of the game. United marched the ball down the field but would fall short and the Tornados went up 12-0 heading into haltime.
Starting the second half, A-Town received the ball and would turn it over on downs. The Red Storm offense then came alive as Sophomore Quarterback Kellen Boone scored on a 55-yard touchdown run, making the score 12-6. The Tornados would get right back in the end zone to go up 20-6 at the end third quarter.
The fourth quarter began on another huge Red Strom offensive play. Zeke Clark scored on a 57-yard pass from Boone to get 12 points on the scoreboard. The Red Storm had a huge defensive stop at the goal line as the Tornados fumbled but the play would end in a punt by the Red Storm and A-Town marched back down the field to go up 28-12. As the seconds ticked away, the Red Storm offense marched down the field to score one last time on two huge passing plays by Boone to Nolan Jenks before Boone would rush in for an 8-yard touchdown, for a final score of 28-18, falling to the Abingdon-Avon Tornados.
