News nobody wants to hear, especially parents of young children, is a cancer diagnosis. October 14, 2022, that very news struck a local family as Tate Martin, the son of Jamie and Andrea Martin, was diagnosed with leukemia. Over the course of the last two years, Tate has received chemotherapy treatments in Iowa City, and was also a recipient of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, where he was the Honorary Team Captain for the day with the Tampa Bay Lightning, arriving in a Lamborghini:

“Be Team Captain for Tampa Bay. We went to the locker room and when I go there, I found out that they made my own jersey for me. It said Tater Tough on the back. My favorite player is [Nikita] Kucherov, but it used to be [Patrick] Maroon. They signed our jersey, which was very, very cool. We got to go on the ice and fist bump all the other players and stuff.”

Tate is in 4th Grade at ICS and will receive his last round of chemo on December 20th, 2024.
