FARM SUCCESSION PLANNING

Farm succession planning can be a daunting conversation for families, but it is an important one nonetheless. To help families navigate these difficult conversations, the University of Illinois Extension is hosting two, free educational programs led by Extension Educator Kevin Brooks. Both programs will take place on December 10th, starting with a 9:30 session at the Knog Ag Center in Galesburg and a 2 pm session at the McDonough County Fairgrounds in Macomb.

“Iowa State did a survey several years ago that indicated in the Midwest, less than one out of every five farm families actually has a succession/ estate plan in place for the continuation of the farm and land they manage through crisis. And the main reason why those plans don’t get done or done, well, it’s just simply because it’s hard, and it has to do with family communication, says Brooks. “So we’ll be talking quite a bit about that aspect of it is what to do with in-laws and how to treat, treat them, or at least in the discussion, as well as how to have a family meeting and working through some of the hard subjects involved in that topic.”
