Scots Men’s Basketball Win at Webster on Saturday

The Monmouth College men’s basketball team bounced back to win 70-66 on Saturday at Webster. The Fighting Scots (6-2) went 1-1 on the weekend at the Gorlock Classic and have one game remaining before the Christmas holiday.

Zay Brown (Peoria, Illinois) got the Scots on the board with a dunk and Jordan Hill (Chicago, Illinois).hit a 3-pointer for a 5-5 tie. Those two combined to score Monmouth’s next seven points as the Scots built a 12-9 lead. The Gorlocks went on a 7-0 run before Kyle Taylor (Moline, Illinois) made a layup. Declan Flynn (Monmouth, Illinois) scored but the hosts scored the next nine for a 28-16 lead. Cameron Thomas (Arlington, Texas) knocked down a 3-pointer before Taylor and Brown both scored in a 7-0 Monmouth run. Flynn hit a 3-pointer with the clock expiring to end the first half with Webster up 34-30.

Hill started the second half with a 3-pointer as he Thomas and Brown scored Monmouth’s first 15 points of the half. Thomas put the Scots on top 44-42 with a 3-pointer and Max Maring (Port Byron, Illinois) scored in the paint. Jason Huber (Carpentersvillle, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer for a 55-52 lead and Hill converted a 3-point play. Monmouth pushed the lead to seven with 1:30 left as Thomas hit a 3-pointer and Taylor made two free throws. Webster cut the lead to four but Taylor made two more free throws with 11 seconds left for a 70-64 lead. Webster scored with five seconds left but Monmouth ran out the clock.

Brown, Hill and Thomas all had 15 points to lead the Scots. Brown also led the team in rebounding with eight while Thomas had seven. Flynn led Monmouth with six assists and also added a block.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Brown has scored at least 10 points in seven games this season … He has led the team in rebounds in two straight games … Thomas hit a career-high four 3-pointers while Hill tied his career-high with three … Hill has made three 3’s in game four times this season and has five games with at least two makes … The Scots were 13-of-16 at the line /// The Scots turned it over 18 times … Monmouth won the rebound battle 35-33 with 11 offensive rebounds … Monmouth leads the all-time series 6-3 with two straight wins … The Scots had never won a road game at Websier with losses in 2021, 2013 and 2003 …The Scots are 3-1 against SLIAC teams this season … The Scots plat at home against Eureka on Wednesday night.
