Another chapter in the long-running sports rivalry between Monmouth and Knox takes place on Saturday at Knox College. It will be the first meeting of the season for both the men’s and women’s teams whose gymnasium doors are separated by a mere 20 minute drive. It’s big one for the Monmouth men and the Knox women. The Knox women currently sit in 4th place in the Midwest Conference standings at (6-3). Just past the halfway point in the conference schedule, the Prairie Fire are just two games in back of first place Ripon and a half game up on 5th place Grinnell. The top four teams advance on to the Midwest Conference tournament for a chance to qualify for the National Tournament. The Monmouth College men’s basketball team finds themselves in first place at (8-2) with six games to play in the conference slate. The Scots are a full game ahead of 2nd place Illinois College and Grinnell and 2 and half games up on 4th place Ripon. Monmouth was picked 5th by the other head coaches in the league in the preseason men’s basketball coach’s poll. Scot’s head coach Todd Skrivseth said he knew before the season started that this might be the deepest the Midwest Conference has been from top-to-bottom the league has been for several years. That has translated to the difference between first place Monmouth and 6th place Lake Forest being a mere 3 games.
Despite a (14-5) overall record and (8-2) conference mark, it hasn’t been easy for the Fighting Scots men. They have preserved through a season-ending knee injury to a key piece of the playing rotation in junior Turner Plumer and talented freshman Cameron Thomas will also miss time with a recent injury. Skrivseth says they’ve gotten off to a great start but must maintain the momentum through a challenging conference schedule.
We’ll have the Monmouth-Knox women’s and men’s double header on the PCSN on Saturday afternoon from Memorial Gymnasium on the Knox College campus. The women will tip-off first at 1:00, followed by the men’s game immediately following at around 3:00. Our AM 1330/FM 95.7 WRAM pregame show will start at 12:40. You can listen on the radio, online at radiomonmouth.com by clicking on LISTEN LIVE or on your cell phone by using our free 1330 WRAM app that you can download from your Google Play or Apple App stores.
