The opportunity to be the next Mayor of Monmouth continues with the election on April 1st. Incumbent Mayor Rod Davies explains what he feels is the purpose of the role of Mayor:
“Running the city government and staying within your means is not easy and it takes a lot of attention to detail and takes a lot of skills, knowledge, and experience, so I guess those are the things that I have been involved with as I consider myself a value added in that way because of my financial background and understanding how to finance things and pay for things that don’t negatively impact our residents, like increasing taxes or increasing water and sewer rates, so I think that is a big piece. The traditional role of mayor and council is that we set policy and direction.”
Challenger Sean Cavanaugh shares what he feels is the purpose of the role of Mayor:
“You have to have a tone that is set that allows people to understand that we are there for them, we work for them all day long. Some people require more attention than others based on whatever their circumstance may be, and we need to get everyone a chance to have their problems resolved, their issued resolved. I think that is very important, tone is very important. Sometimes it appears to be somewhat of a disconnect and I want to make sure that disconnect goes away. Also, the mayor sets an agenda of what needs to occur.”
Both Mayor Rod Davies and Challenger Sean Cavanaugh were born and raised in Monmouth, and both currently serve in key roles in local government.
