On Thursday, February 6th at 10:57 AM, the Monmouth Fire Department responded to 1005 South 6th Street in Monmouth for a report of a structure fire. Ladder 40, Engine 21, and Unit 505 responded to the scene and found a two story residence with heavy smoke and flames coming from two windows on the second floor of the home. Assistant Chief Spears upgraded the alarm to a Working Still initiating the response of off-duty firefighters and the Galesburg Hospital Ambulance Service. Chief Rexroat arrived and assumed command while crews made an aggressive transitional attack on the fire. Firefighters knocked down the bulk of the fire through a window from the outside and then quickly switched to an interior attack to extinguish any remaining fire.

The family was home at the time of the fire but escaped with no injuries. Due to the extent of heat, smoke, and water damage, the home is not habitable and the family is displaced. The American Red Cross and 1-800-BOARDUP responded to the scene to assist.

The Monmouth Fire Department has completed an investigation and has determined the cause to be accidental.
