The NFC Champions Philadelphia Eagles and the AFC Champions Kansas City Chiefs will square off tomorrow night during Super Bowl 59. While the Chiefs are trying to become the first team to ever win three-straight Super Bowls and the Eagles will look to win their first in eight years, some watch just for the commercials, which Monmouth College Professor of Business and Economics Tom Prince says a new milestone has been reached:
“We have an interesting year this year, we have reached a new milestone. The normal 30-second spot for this year started at $7 million and it has risen to $8 million currently and there was a waiting list for commercials this year. Additionally, commercials this year are I think very interesting. We have taken a different approach to advertising. About 27 percent of the ads currently are taking a very serious approach, and emotional appeal, a dramatic kind of appeal to their ad. The rest are really going for humor and humor in advertising is a very risky thing; it can either be very successful or it can fall short.”
Comparing Super Bowl commercial prices through the years, according to superbowlads.com, a 30-second ad for Super Bowl 1 back in 1965 cost $37,500.
