The Abingdon-Avon Tornado girls basketball team checked another of their season goals off the list last Thursday night. The Tornadoes beat the Wethersfield Flying Geese 46-30 to claim their first sectional championship in consolidation, Abingdon Commando or Avon Trojan girls basketball history. The victory over the Flying Geese avenged a loss to Illini Bluffs last season at the same stage of the postseason and sends the Tornadoes to uncharted territory.
Pecatonica will be the opponent in the super sectional game at Brimfield High School on Monday night. Pecatonica is (29-6) and were tied for 3rd in the final regular season AP Poll. The Indians are led by their Division-1 signee, Elaina Rager. The 6-9 Rager is a soon-to-be 4-time all-state honoree, averaging 18 points and 6 rebounds a game.
The Tornadoes come into tonight’s game at (30-4), winners of 18 of their last 19 games. The only loss in that stretch was to Peoria Notre Dame, 72-39. PND is in a class 2A super sectional on Monday night, as well. A-Town head coach Brent Dugan says his team has checked off a lot of goals this season, but they have a few more.
