The Monmouth College softball team dropped a pair of games to Illinois Wesleyan on Tuesday in the first home games of the season. The Fighting Scots were run-ruled 18-1 in game one and lost game two 7-0.
In the opener, IWU took a 2-0 lead against Alyssa Hefflefinger (Olin, Iowa) in the first inning. The visitors made it 7-0 in the second.
Brooklyn Millhollin (Peoria, Illinois) picked up Monmouth’s first hit with a double to the wall in left-center in the second inning. With two outs, Mackenzie Gerard (Jacksonville, Illinois) put the Scots on the board with a RBI single to left.
The Titans scored five runs in the fourth inning and six more in the fifth.Shelby Covey (Peoria, Illinois) and Savannah Powers (Volo, Illinois) both singled for the Scots in the fourth but three straight outs ended the inning. The Scots went in order in the fifth to end the game.
GAME TWO
Lizzie Durfee (Arlington, Washington) kept the Titans off the board for three innings in game two. However, the Scots went in order in each of the first three frames and IWU took a 3-0 lead in the fourth. They added four more in the fifth and led 7-0 after six innings.
Monmouth didn’t have a base runner through six innings. Karliegh Ashby (Monmouth, Illinois) broke up the perfect game and no-hitter with a leadoff single in the seventh. The next three batters were retired in order as IWU won the game 7-0 with one hit allowed.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Gerard has four RBI in the last three games … Covey threw out a basestealer in game one … Monmouth did not commit an error in 12 innings on Tuesday … IWU has won 23 straight in the series … Millhollin is tied for second on the team lead with three doubles … The Scots play a DH next Tuesday at Wheaton … The next home game is on Saturday, April 5 with a DH against Eureka.
