This Saturday, April 12th, the Regional Office of Education #33 is hosting their second annual The First Five: A Birth to Five Self-Regulation Event for caregivers and children ages zero to five, with activities focusing on balance, breathing, mindful poses, stimulation, and movement, explains Early Childhood Pre-School Behavioral Consultant Lisa Medina Foshay and Early Childhood Pre-School Family Educator Ashley Hinkle:
“A lot of our kids are dysregulated. What that means is they are not getting enough of the sensory input that they need to make them feel calm and so we are trying to, hopefully, educate the families that we serve and also just the community on how they can get some of those needs met,” Medina Foshay states.
“There are eight senses; tactile, which is your touch; gustatory, which is your taste; olfactory, which is your smell; auditory is your hearing; and then of course visual. Then we have three that not a lot of people know about yet. The first one is proprioception, which is centered in your muscles and joints and gives information about the force of movements in the position of your body parts,’ reports Hinkle.
“The vestibular system is where your body is telling you what your position is in space and then interoception is another system where your body says whether you’re hungry, thirsty, or tired,” adds Medina Foshay.
Saturday’s Regional Office of Education free event will take place at their Galesburg office, 932 Harrison Street from 10 am to noon.
