The agricultural industry is a major economic driver worldwide, but especially in the Midwest. From growing corn and soybeans, to caring for cattle or hogs, or tending to fruits and vegetables in a garden, the wide array of services and goods through agriculture supports everyday life. As an important piece of the country’s economy, teaching the truth about agriculture to tomorrow’s consumers is vital, particularly at a young age, which is what the Warren-Henderson Ag in the Classroom strives to do. Building on programs presented in the classrooms, Summer Ag Institutes are held annually for teachers with this year focusing on ‘Ag on the Go,’ informs Ag in the Classroom Coordinator Anna Sharp.
“The whole state will be hosting them throughout the summer, but anyone from any county can come to it. We try to make sure the tours and information is good for all ages. You don’t have to be an elementary teacher. We always have some junior high teachers and a high school teacher or two that will come, but we try and make sure it is a fun two days. They are both stand alone days, so you can do both or just pick one day or the other,” adds Sharp. “The theme this year is transportation, so planes, trains, and automobiles. Obviously, with agriculture, a huge part of it, is getting it from place to place.”
