The 43rd George Hermann Western Illinois Senior Olympics (WISO) wrapped up with resounding success, as many athletes from across Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, California and Florida gathered at Western Illinois University to celebrate competition, fitness and community.

Spanning over 30 events across nine sports, including track and field, swimming, cycling, golf and more, the WISO showcased the talent, resilience and camaraderie of adults aged 50 and above. Athletes displayed incredible performances across all sports, setting personal bests and forging new friendships along the way.

“We couldn’t be prouder of the spirit and dedication shown by our participants,” said Tammi Bories, the WISO coordinator. “This weekend highlighted not only athletic excellence but also the power of community and the joy of staying active throughout life.”

The weekend included memorable performances, with dozens of ribbons awarded and new records achieved. The event was highlighted by a strong turnout of families, friends and community supporters who cheered on the athletes.

The event was organized by WIU’s Department of Health and Wellness Services in collaboration with community partners, who provided on-site wellness resources and volunteer support. Three faculty and student volunteers from the department were invaluable in assisting with all athletic events and preparing food and decorations for the event’s social. The McDonough District Hospital assisted with the bike race and the students of Western Emergency Medical Services (WEMS) donated their time to ensure everyone had a safe and enjoyable experience.

“From the volunteers to the spectators and most importantly, our athletes, this year’s event was truly inspiring,” Bories added. “We look forward to welcoming everyone back and new athletes to join us next year.”
