Brannock McVey, a 2018 graduate of United High School, has been on an impressive path since leaving the U304 school district. Out of high school, McVey attended Illinois College to continue his baseball and academic career. Around that time the Covid-19 Virus happened, McVey says this gave him a chance to reflect and think about what he really wants to do. Once everything opened back up, McVey ended up transferring to the University of Illinois, where he graduated with a degree in History and Teaching. Since finishing his degree, McVey enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard last August.
“The reason I am in limbo right now, is I am in “A” School. The Coast Guard is a bit different than other branches, whereas I understand it, the case normally for pretty much any other branch, you graduate boot camp and then you ship off directly to a select training for whatever job you have been chosen for or choose to do in your branch. The Coast Guard is a little bit different. You graduate boot camp, go to a unit, and you get to feel out the different jobs; you get to learn and practice the jobs before you actually are locked into one. So, I graduated boot camp, went to Michigan to learn, and now here I am at “A” School. After I graduate “A” School, I will be a Third-Class Petty Officer. I will be a Yeoman, which is more of an administrative job, helping people retire, helping people ensure they are getting paid properly when they advance, those sorts of things.”
United States Armed Forces Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May, which falls on May 17th this year.
