Winners of 36th Sandburg Poetry Competition Announced

Carl Sandburg College has announced the winners of the 36th annual Sandburg Poetry Competition.

First through third place and honorable mentions were selected in four categories: elementary (grades K-5), junior (grades 6-8), intermediate (grades 9-12) and adult. Award winners were invited to attend a banquet April 29 in the Science & Technology Center.

Elementary

First place — “Poetry and a dragon named Dave” by Addison Shinn

Second place — “A New World” by Connor Patterson

Third place — “Lombard” by Deklan Spalding

Honorable mention — “Basketball” by Finley Irons

Honorable mention — “Brother” by Jaxton Edwards

Junior

First place — “Cry Me a River” by Stella Bennett

Second place — “Underneath the Willow Tree” by Persephone Reed

Third place — “The Lunchbox Kid” by Elizabeth Martin

Honorable mention — “I Have Everything I Need” by Elliotte Surprenant

Honorable mention — “Midnight Slowly Approaching” by Heidi Amschler

Intermediate

First place — “Compared to Others” by Amaya Savage

Second place — “The World Continues On” by Angelina Comandini

Third place — “Nerves” by Desiree Morse

Honorable mention — “Welcome to Society” by Gracie Yelm

Honorable mention — “Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall” by Stephanie Heiden

Adult

First place — “Earl” by Kacie Moore

Second place — “Welcome Home” by Michael Bennett

Third place — “burn // my baby” by Jade Albright

Honorable mention — “A Feral Garden” by Marie Smysor Watson
