Monmouth College’s Academic Restructure Aims to Match Student Interests and Careers

To expand academic opportunities, realign with student interests, and position for long-term growth, Monmouth College has changed up their academic structure to enhance career pathways and learning experiences, shares President Dr. Patricia Draves:

“There are some academic majors that students are just not pursuing, and we have several of those where we had one or two students. We made the decision to phase those out because to have qualified faculty with one or two students is a financial resource, but more importantly we want to make sure the students have a good learning environment. We know that the liberal art skills are the durable skills that are going to help you move seamlessly through lots of different careers and we have seen that with our alums over and over again. So, that was the core anchor of our commitment moving forward. We have decided that we will still have courses in those areas to have students exposed as part of the breath of a liberal arts education but not necessarily offer the major.”

Six new academic schools have been created as a result, explains Senior Director of Marketing Keri Dodson:

“With the academic schools comes benefits as well; stronger advising and mentoring for students with broader advising networks with curricular design and just that stronger interdisciplinary collaboration is what the schools will provide. The schools are the School of Business, the School of Health and Natural Sciences, the School of Engineering, Sciences, and Innovation, the School of Education and Human Development, the School of Communication and Creative and Performing Arts, and the School of Humanities and Civic Engagement.”

The Fall Semester for students at Monmouth College begins Tuesday, August 19th.
