Fair week is winding down for the showmen in McDonough County. Wednesday kicked off with the 4-H Swine Show, which was judged by Preston Rhode. 

Results of the 4-H Breeding Gilt Show 

The Breeding Gilt show started with the Purebred Gilt show, which included five classes. The Champion Purebred Gilt title went to the Berkshire Gilt exhibited by Mason Turner. Reserve Champion Purebred Gilt went to the Landrace exhibited by Hailey Turner. 

In the Crossbred Gilt Show, there were four classes. Mason Turner and his Crossbreed were named champions, with Kylie McGrew earning the reserve title. 

Turner Wins Grand Champion of the Gilt Show

The champions of the Pure and Crossbred show returned to the ring to compete for the Grand Champion Gilt title and for the chance to show at The Throwdown; a Western Illinois Showdown on August 2nd. Mason Turner’s Crossbred was selected as the Grand Champion and punched his ticket for the show. Kylie McGrew and her crossbred earned the Reserve Champion of the Gilt Show. 

To help prepare for the Throwdown, Turner shares he will continue to work with his gilt.

“Do more chores with her and practice,” says Turner. “Walking her in the yard and walking her 30 minutes a day, washing her, conditioning her, and blowing her.”

Results of the 4-H Barrow Show

Following the Gilt Show, the barrows entered the ring, starting with the purebreds. There were eight classes of purebred barrows exhibited. The Champion Purebred Barrow title went to Kylie McGrew and her Spot. Reserve Champion went to Hailey Turner and her Landrace. 

In the Crossbred Barrow Show, there were five classes. Nolan Hoge and his Crossbreed were named champion, with Nora Hoge earning the reserve title.
