2025 marks the 200th Anniversary of Warren County and the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolutionary War. This Thursday, July 10th, Warren County History Museum Executive Director Dr. Eugene Watkins will present ‘The Creation of Warren County and the Man Behind the Name:’
“The 200th Anniversary of the creation of Warren County, it was the signing of a document in the capitol of Vandalia at the time in 1825. At this point this land was lived on by the Sauk and Fox in the 1770s. The first American settlers that moved to the area don’t arrive until about 1827. At the time they created this, Henderson County did belong to Warren County, so we were one giant county and didn’t split those until 1841. The big thing with the anniversary though is the naming of the county. This is not only the 200th Anniversary for the creation of Warren County, but it is the 250th Anniversary of the Independence of the United States from the British Empire. Going along with that, many of the counties in this area received names after the heroes of the Revolution and War of 1812. Warren County received its’ name from Dr. Joseph Warren, who was a medical doctor in Boston. He’s considered one of the three Founding Fathers of the country.”
Dr. Watkins will be discussing more on Illinois being one of fourteen states with a county named after Joseph Warren on Thursday, July 10th at the Warren County History Museum in Monmouth beginning at 7 am, which is free and open to the public.
