Although it doesn’t feel like it yet, those cooler temperatures will set in before you know it. When it comes to prepping your HVAC system for the fall and winter months, IHC Heating and Cooling Owner Justin McKeown advises not wrapping those air conditioning units:

“A lot of people want to cover their air conditioning units once the weather changes. I advise either set a brick and a board on top of it or don’t wrap it. A lot of people will put blue tarps around them or whatever, but it actually makes a nice house for the mice to get in. When the sun shines on the tarps or whatever plastic you have wrapped around, the mice actually will get in and they will eat the wiring off the unit because the wires are actually made out of soybean oil and they are attracted to that. So, that is the number one thing I would say for the outdoor units, just leave them alone. They are designed to be rained in, snow is not going to hurt them.”

Changing air filters, sealing any air leaks, cleaning vents and ducts, having proper thermostat settings, and scheduling a professional maintenance checkup can all help ensure your furnace system is ready for the cold weather ahead.
