Salon professionals such as hair stylists, nail technicians and cosmetologists often have hundreds of clients. Chances are likely that at least some of their clients live in an abusive household. Spotting the signs of abuse and knowing how to safely and respectfully help the survivor are important skills for these professions that are sometimes overlooked. That is why staff of the Victim Services department at WIRC-Community Action Agency are hosting a domestic violence awareness training specifically for beauty professionals.
The one-hour seminar is called ‘Cut it Out: Salons Against Domestic Abuse’. It is offered through the Professional Beauty Association Foundation, a national organization network of stylists, manufacturers, and other professionals involved in beauty professions. The seminar will be taught in Macomb by staff of Victim Services who specialize in safely assisting domestic violence survivors. Students will learn how to recognize the warning signs of abuse when interacting with their clients, and then how to respectfully discuss the topic and safely assist them.
There are two opportunities to attend the seminar. One opportunity will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 12, and the other will be held at 2:00 p.m. that same day. It will be hosted at WIRC’s main office, located at 133 West Jackson Street in Macomb near the Courthouse Square.
The cost to attend is $15 per person. Online payment and registration options are available through Givebutter at https://givebutter.com/091s7p/. Payment by check or cash (exact change) is also available at the event. Registration costs are used to support free programs offered by Victim Services to survivors of abuse.
