Story by Parker Cassidy
The United Red Storm football team was at home last Friday hosting Lincoln Land Small School foe, the Abingdon-Avon Tornadoes. United jumped out to an early lead in this one, going up 6-0 after their first drive on offense. Abingdon-Avon answered by scoring the next three touchdowns to take a 20-6 lead with a little under two minutes left in the second quarter. However, the Red Storm weren’t content going into halftime with that deficit, as Kellen Boone connected with Koen Sperry for a touchdown before the break to cut it to 20-12 at halftime.
United’s offense continued where it left off, adding three touchdowns in the second half, but the defense struggled to slow down the Tornadoes, who put up 39 points over the final two quarters. The Red Storm fall, 59-30. Head Coach Andrew Goodwin says despite the defeat, his team was able to take some positives into this week’s match up:
The Red Storm drop to 0-4 after the loss and will have their hands full tonight as they travel to Stark County. The Rebels currently hold a 4-0 record as United will look to pull off the upset on the road.
The Monmouth-Roseville Titans stayed unbeaten last Friday with a dominant 42-21 win over Mendota. The Titans took control early, jumping out to a 42-0 lead just two minutes into the third quarter. Nick Huston led the charge with 126 rushing yards and four touchdowns, plus a blocked punt returned for another score, finishing with five total touchdowns. Landon Montroy added 87 yards and a touchdown as the Titans’ ground game rolled again. Mendota scored a couple of touchdowns late, but Monmouth-Roseville was in full control throughout, improving to 4-0.
The Titans now turn their attention to a huge TRAC Mississippi Division matchup tonight as they travel to Princeton to take on the Tigers. Both teams enter the night with 2-0 records in the Mississippi Division. Not only is this game massive for the conference standings, with the winner gaining a big leg up in the TRAC West race, but it is also Princeton’s Homecoming. Last year’s matchup between the two was Monmouth-Roseville’s Homecoming game, where the Titans rolled to a 31-3 victory. The Tigers will be looking to return the favor tonight, but Head Coach Jeremy Adolphson says his squad will be ready:
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. tonight in Princeton. We will have the broadcast right here on Sunny 97.7, with pregame coverage starting at 6:30. A win tonight would make Monmouth-Roseville playoff eligible for the fifth straight season.
