The Abingdon-Avon Tornadoes were in Rushville last Friday for a tough Lincoln Land Small School Conference matchup with the Rushville-Industry Rockets. The Tornadoes entered the night at 3-4, needing two straight wins to close the regular season and stay playoff eligible, while the Rockets had already secured a postseason spot at 5-2.
The Rockets struck first with the lone touchdown of the opening quarter. Abingdon-Avon got on the board in the second, but their defense struggled to slow the Rushville-Industry offense, trailing 32-6 at halftime. The Tornadoes’ defense tightened up in the second half, holding the Rockets to just two scores, but the offense couldn’t find their rhythm. A-Town’s final touchdown came in the fourth quarter, as Abingdon-Avon fell 46-14, nearly squashing their chance at the playoffs this season.
Head Coach Rick Quinn says there’s no time to dwell, as the Tornadoes still have one more chance to end the season on a good note and honor the outgoing seniors.
Three of the five A-Town losses on the season came by a total of a mere four points. The Tornadoes will close out the regular season this Friday in Abingdon, hosting ROWVA/Williamsfield. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm, with senior night celebrations starting at around 6:15.
