There will be no Special Service Area (SSA) tax for property owners on the Public Square in Downtown Monmouth for maintenance. Following a presentation from the Maple City Area Partnership, Monmouth City Council has approved a voluntary approach where they will contribute $15,000 annually over a four-year time frame, explains City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher:
“We had a request from the Maple City Area Partnership for the City to participate in a group of others interested in maintaining the Public Square in terms of snow removal and summer maintenance. The request was for the City to contribute $15,000 annually for a four-year period of time. This is actually in lieu of an earlier effort where they were looking at possibly creating a Special Service Area, they have since decided to go with a voluntary approach. The goal is to raise $60,000 a year and use those funds to hire a private landscaping contractor to provide those services.”
For the first two years, sand will be put down instead of salt in order to not damage the newly poured concrete on the Public Square.
