Like the rest of us, award winning Chicago Cubs announcer Pat Hughes has to wait another day to learn if the Cubs move on in post season MLB play, but he knows for certain where he’ll be come November 6 as that’s the date set for his induction into the IBA’s Hall of Fame.
Hughes adds the IBA honor to a long list of other Hall of Fames he’s been inducted into including his high school alma mater’s Branham High School Athletic Hall of Fame, the Irish/American Baseball Hall of Fame, and in 2022, the Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame, the same year he received the coveted Ford C. Frick Award in conjunction with MLB’s Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. He now joins former Cubs announcers, Frick Award recipients, and IBA Hall of Famers Jack Brickhouse and Harry Caray as an IBA Hall of Famer.
Career achievements for Hughes are many including nine Illinois Sportscaster of the Year awards, three Wisconsin Sportscaster of the Year awards, and in 2016 he was honored with the Ring Lardner Awards for Excellence in Sports Journalism (Broadcast category.)
Hughes career resume include calling the games of the Minnesota Twins, the Milwaukee Brewers, and alongside Al McGuire for 17 seasons of Marquette University men’s basketball and then in November of 1995 Hughes learned he would be the new “Voice of the Cubs” sharing the broadcast booth with Ron Santo until Santo’s death in 2010.
“I am greatly honored to be included in the Illinois Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame,” exclaimed Hughes upon learning of his upcoming induction. “I hope that I can have stories of the Cubs winning the 2025 World Series at the ceremony!”
