Dr. Eugene Watkins the Keynote Speaker of Annual Veterans Day Program at the Monmouth American Legion

The Monmouth American Legion will be hosting the annual Veterans Day Service on Tuesday, November 11th at 10 a.m. The keynote speaker this year will be Dr. Eugene Watkins, who is the Executive Director of the Warren County History Museum.

The Lecture featured is:

“The First United States Infantry Regiment at Fort Madison, 1808-1813”

A brief look at the War of 1812 in our area and how the United States’ military has always filled a variety of roles in its mission to protect our Nation.

Dr. Eugene Watkins grew up in Indiana. He received a BA in U.S. History from Millikin University in Decatur, IL, a MA in Civil War and Reconstruction from the University of Richmond in Richmond, VA and a PhD in Early Republic, 1789-1828 from the University of Toledo in Toledo, OH. In 2023 he was hired by the Warren County Historical Society as the Pattee Executive Director of the Warren County History Museum. His historical focus has been United States military history in the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly the frontier and western theatres of operation during the War of 1812 and Civil War.

The event begins at 10:00 a.m. and concludes with the National Salute, re-instituted in 2015, is a means to show our deep respect for our Unknown Soldiers buried in the plaza of the Memorial Amphitheater in Arlington National Cemetery and all veterans. Taps For Veterans is asking buglers, trumpet and coronet players to participate in the National Salute ceremony on the 11th Hour, of the 11th Day, of the 11th Month. The event will be broadcast live on WRAM.
