Record prices at last week’s Certified Angus Beef sale in Fairview are highlighting just how tight the cattle market has become, shares Schleich Cattle’s Tyler Schlich.
“Last week, they had the CAB sale in Fairview and a record set of prices,” shares Schleich. “Cattle numbers are still low, and as somebody that sells feed, is in the industry, breeds a lot of replacement heifers- I can tell you, the last two years, we have not been holding those heifers back to grow. And I would imagine we will be in the same boat this year. It’s hard to grow a cow herd when you can send the bottom end of your heifers to town for $2,500 to $3,000. I’d like to say that that has made the herds that we have better, but I don’t foresee the numbers growing.”
With supplies remaining tight and demand strong, producers say the market could continue to support historically high cattle prices in the months ahead.
