Another chapter of the Monmouth College-Knox College sports rivalry takes place on Wednesday at Glennie Gym on the Monmouth College campus. The Fighting Scots and Prairie Fire men’s and women’s basketball teams will clash with Midwest Conference tournament berths and seedings for the tournament on the line in each game.
First up, the men will take the floor. Monmouth is currently tied with Grinnell for first place in the conference at (12-1) with three games remaining for both teams. The two schools split their regular season series, with each winning on their home floor. The conference regular season champ hosts the four-team tournament at the end of the season. Monmouth won the regular season title last year, before falling at home in the conference tournament semifinals to Lake Forest. Grinnell would go on to win the tournament title and get the National Tournament bid that comes along with it, by beating Lake Forest in the championship game. The Knox men still have a shot at making the conference tournament but will most likely need to win out and get some help. The Prairie Fire are all alone in 5th at (5-7) in conference play, that’s a game and a half behind 4th place Illinois College. The men will tip-off at 5:30 and you can hear it on the PCSN on AM 1330/FM 95.7 WRAM, online at radiomonmouth.com or on our free 1330 WRAM app for your smartphone or tablet.
The women’s game between Monmouth and Knox will start after the men’s game is over and a short pregame warmup. Tip-off is tentatively scheduled for 7:30. The Knox women can virtually assure themselves of a spot in the conference tournament with a win. They can certainly help their seeding in the tournament as well. The Prairie Fire are in 3rd place at (9-3), a half game out of second, behind Lawrence University. Ripon has already clinched the regular season outright at (14-0). Knox has a 2.5 game lead over 4th place Cornell and Grinnell, who are tied at (7-6). The Monmouth women have been eliminated from the conference tournament but with the long-standing rivalry between the two schools, they would love nothing more than to play spoiler.
