The young United Red Storm girls basketball squad is starting to piece things together as postseason play approaches.
The Red Storm struggled early in the season, but that was expected with a roster made up of just one senior and one junior. Things are beginning to fall into place for United after picking up their first Lincoln Trail Conference win of the season and their first set of back-to-back victories.
United started the streak with a 40-38 win at home against South Fulton on Saturday, a game where freshman Natali Postin led the way with 15 points.
The Red Storm returned home on Monday night to host West Central on Senior Night, honoring lone senior Sara Shimmin. While the story of this team has been its youth, Shimmin has provided steady leadership and reliability night in and night out.
Shimmin scored nine points in United’s 48-23 win over the Heat. Freshman Izzy Keith added 15 points, while fellow freshman Ada Kunkle poured in a game-high 20.
Head coach Chris Olson says the underclassmen are starting to show signs of becoming consistent scoring threats.
“We’re early, you never know what will happen, but this group is looking like they might have a couple, two or three bodies that can really score and put pressure on a defense. Then we continue to develop catch-and-shoot threes from the guards and staying well-rounded, to help us take advantage of situations. With Ada, Natali, Izzy, and Cam doing what they’re doing right now, there are glimpses of that future of steady scoring options.”
United has two games remaining in the regular season. The Red Storm will hit the road tomorrow for their final Lincoln Trail Conference matchup at Wethersfield, with tipoff set for 7 pm.
They will close the regular season at home next Wednesday against Mercer County. The postseason begins a week from Saturday, with matchups set to be released Friday.
