Robert Eugene “Bob” Meling, 91, of Springfield, formerly of Monmouth, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026, in Springfield, Illinois.
Bob was born on April 14, 1934, in Kings, IL to Clarence & Mabel Meling. He attended Iowa State University where he met his wife, Carolyn. Bob went on to serve in the United States Army, a chapter of his life he was incredibly proud of. His time in the Army meant so much to him, and the support and care he later received through veterans services were a great comfort and blessing to him and his family.
From humble beginnings, he built a life rooted in faith, family, and hard work. Bob established his life in Monmouth, Illinois, where he became a respected member of the community as part owner of the family business, Meling’s Family Motel & Restaurant and part owner of Monmouth Farm & Home Realty. Through his work, Bob formed countless friendships and left a lasting mark on the community he loved.
A man of deep and abiding faith, Bob was a devoted member of Faith United Presbyterian Church where he sang in the church choir for 35 years. His church family was an important part of his life, and his faith carried him through both joyful seasons and life’s greatest challenges.
Above all else, Bob was a devoted husband and family man. He shared 69 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Carolyn Meling — a partnership built on unwavering love, commitment, and faith. Together they created a legacy that will continue for generations.
In his later years, Bob faced the challenges of Bulbar ALS with remarkable courage and quiet strength. Though the disease gradually took his voice and physical abilities, it never diminished his spirit, his faith, or the love he had for his family. Even in the hardest moments, his resilience and grace were a powerful example to all who walked beside him.
He is lovingly remembered by his children, Michelle (Greg) Curran and Michael (Shannon) Meling. His legacy lives on through his five cherished grandchildren: John (Missy) Curran, Chris (Kaleigh) Curran, Marissa Meling, Mason (Deanna) Meling, and Molly (Fumio) Himeno. Bob was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren: Jayleigh, Scarlett, Meredith & Julia Curran; Calihan, Charlee, Vivian Himeno, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Dave Meling, and is survived by his sister-in-law, Janet, and his niece, Missy (Maurice) Murphy.
Bob leaves behind a lifetime of love, lessons, laughter, and steadfast faith that will continue to guide his family every day. He was a man who believed deeply, loved generously, and lived fully. His steady presence, warm smile, and enduring wisdom will be dearly missed.
A Celebration of Bob’s Life will be held at a later date in Monmouth, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bob’s honor to support research to the ALS Association or Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth, IL.
