Suicide affects everyone in some way, shape, or form; that is why Stacy Brown and Bridgeway want to continue bringing attention to and talking about this tragic subject.
“In Illinois specifically, one person takes their life every six hours. In the state of Illinois, more people die by suicide than by homicide. Also in Illinois, for the ages of 15 to 34, it’s the third-leading cause of death. And for ages 35 to 54, it’s the fourth-leading cause,” Brown said.
In an effort to raise suicide awareness, Bridgeway will hold a showing of the critically acclaimed documentary “Suicide: The Ripple Effect” at the Orpheum Theater on August 14 starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5, and can be found at both the Orpheum and Bridgeway.
The film highlights the journey of Kevin Hines, who at age 19, attempted to take his life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. Today Kevin is a world-renowned mental health advocate, motivational speaker and author who travels the globe spreading a message of hope, recovery and wellness.
Brown shared why it’s important to keep the conversation going about this sensitive, but crucial subject moving forward:
“Although we want people to understand why this happens and how people feel and how they get to that point, the main message of this documentary is that it is possible to recover … We want you to be here tomorrow,” she said.
