Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Feb. 24, 2021

Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan girls basketball team was without two key players last night due to a family visitation but that did not deter them from getting a 47-25 win over Orion at Monmouth-Roseville High School. It took a little while to get going as the scrappy win-less Chargers hung on for at least a half. It took a basket by Lexi Finnicum at the first quarter buzzer for the Titans to get a 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. A 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer gave Monmouth-Roseville a 22-12 lead at the break. The Titans outscored the Chargers 25-13 in the second half to get the 22-point victory. Sophomore Mattie Gillen led Monmouth-Roseville with sixteen points and senior Kelci Shelton had 14 as well for the Titans, who improve to (5-1) overall on the season. Monmouth-Roseville gets right back on the floor tonight, traveling to Kewanee for a game against Wethersfield.

The United Red Storm girls basketball got off to a tough start against perennial power Knoxville in a non-conference game in Knoxville. The Red Storm trailed 36-6 at the half but outscored the Blue Bullets 20-16 in the second half. Knoxville gets the 52-26 win. Luci Kane led United with seven points. Kynlee Stearns and Kaci Luptak each scored ten points for Knoxville.

The Abingdon-Avon Tornado boys basketball team held their senior night festivities before their game against South Fulton last night. Following the ceremony, the Tornadoes get a 62-40 win over the Rebels. Senior Kaden Jones broke out for 38 points for the Tornadoes. A-Town travels to Monmouth-Roseville High School tonight. We’ll have that one on the PCSN. It will be senior night for Monmouth-Roseville. Our Sunny 97.7 WMOI pregame show will start at 7:15.

The Knoxville Blue Bullet boys basketball defeated West Prairie 68-61 to improve to (7-1) overall. Jason Hise led three players for the Blue Bullets in double figures with 26. Evan Rossell and David Hise had 19 and 16 points, respectively.

Swimming and diving

United sophomore swimmer Ethan Elswick garnered his first wins of his high school career last night in a meet at Macomb. Elswick won the 200 and 500 yard freestyle events.

Junior High

The Monmouth-Roseville Jr. High boys basketball teams hosted Orion Wednesday night. The 7th grade Titans dropped a 35-27 decision to the Chargers. Calogero Sarcomo led Monmouth-Roseville with 15 points. The 8th grade Titans fell to the Chargers 43-30. Junior Avendano had 8 points for the Titans.

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan junior high volleyball teams traveled to Orion Wednesday night. The 7th grade Titans suffered a loss to Orion in 2 sets with scores of 25-5 and 25-11. Scoring leaders were Catlin Nelson and Abbey Hood with 2 aces each. The 8th grade Titans fell to Orion in a 2 game set with the scores of 25-12 and 25-18. Leading the Titans in stats, Tatianna Talivaa with 8 digs and 4 serving points. Brianna Woodard has 5 serving points, 2 kills, 2 digs and 2 blocks. Emily Gunn had 6 digs and Mia Reynolds had 5 serving points and 5 assists.

The United Red Storm Jr. High volleyball teams split a pair of matches in Annawan. After dropping the first set, the Red Storm 7th grade team came back to win the next two sets, winning 24-26 25-16 25-13. Sara Shimmin served 6 aces and Kendall Mills led the way with 6 kills for United. Shimmin also had 5 assists. Annawan won the 8th grade match 25-15, 25-8. Emma Robinson had 2 aces for the Red Storm. Emma Robinson had 2 kills and Cameron Anderson added 2 assists for United.

The United Jr. High boys basketball teams hosted ROWVA on Wednesday night. United’s 7th grade squad was victorious 33-17. Nolan Jenks’s 18 points led the Red Storm. United’s 8th grade completed a sweep on the night, winning 34-19. Leading the Red Storm was Landon Hannam with 10.
