Weather can change in an instant. Being prepared for severe weather before it ever strikes is very important, says University of Illinois Extension Community and Development Educator Carrie McKillip:
“Remember to either have a weather radio or a weather app on your phone that will notify because outside sirens are geared to notify people who are outside. We have gotten really good over the years at pinpointing where tornados are and where they are going. If you hear a warning for your area and your radio station is telling people to take cover, please take cover. Get to an inside room. Get as many walls between you and the outside as possible. If you have a two-story house, go under the stairs; anything to keep you as safe as possible.”
Be prepared and stay informed. Locally, sirens may be sound for weather alerts such as tornados, hail, or even extreme winds.
