Region 4 Champion Chargers Tee Up New Season This Weekend

Share

After a historic 2022-23 season, the Carl Sandburg College women’s golf team starts a new campaign Saturday.

The Chargers, coming off their first Region 4 championship and an appearance at the NJCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championship, begin their fall schedule by hosting the Charger Invite on Saturday at Lake Bracken.

NOTABLE RETURNER

Ellie Wasson (sophomore, Rock Falls)

  • Was Sandburg’s top finisher at last season’s national tournament, placing 78th overall.
  • Took third at last year’s Region 4 tournament, earning a spot on the all-region team.
  • Posted a season-best 79 in the final round of the Augustana Highland Classic.
  • Chargers coach Gail Hannam: “Ellie finished last year at nationals with a very solid effort, so we’re looking for those results to continue.”

KEY NEWCOMER

Ava Hackman (freshman, Oregon)

  • Two-time IHSA state qualifier.
  • Tied for 21st at last year’s Class 1A state tournament.
  • Hannam: “Ava has played a lot of competitive golf this summer, and I think she will be ready for collegiate golf.”

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS TEAM THIS SEASON?

Hannam: “We’re looking to consistently shoot lower team scores. Returning three sophomores this season should make that possible.”

MATCH TO WATCH

Saturday’s Charger Invite at Lake Bracken will feature all of the women’s golf programs in Region 4.

SCHEDULE SHAKEUP
In a change from past years, the Chargers’ national qualifying tournament will take place during the spring season instead of the fall. The NJCAA Division I Midwest District championship will be held in April at PrairieView in Byron, with the winner advancing to nationals.

THIS WILL BE A SUCCESSFUL SEASON IF …

Hannam: “If we have good team chemistry, are good students in the classroom and have success on the golf course.”
