The Jamieson Community Center in Monmouth will be opening a new learning center at their location later this year. Nancy Mowen, the Jamieson Center’s Director, talked about how the move will help area children.

“We will have some technology in place that we’ll be using, but we’re going to be doing a lot of hands-on,” Mowen said. We want to offer some alternatives. Everybody learns differently. If we can provide a variety of ways for children to learn, I think we can reach more children.”

The learning center will be funded by the Pattee Foundation, and will offer tutoring in fundamental skills such as reading, writing, and math to children grades 1 through 6.

Mowen also touched on some programs that the Center will be offering in the coming weeks. On Sept. 7th, the WIRC will present a budget building program called “Build Your Budget.” On Sept. 20th, Safelink – a phone program for low-income families – will appear in the Center’s thrift store from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Also, all apparel items at the thrift store are currently buy one, get one free.
