OSF's Kendall Talks Breast Cancer Awareness

Share

Kelly Kendall, Community Relations Specialist at OSF Health Care Holy Family Medical in Monmouth, talked about an upcoming event going on at the end of the month. Adiah Oyefesobi, a nurse midwife from St. Mary’s in Galesburg, will be holding a free lunch & learn event on Thursday, Oct. 26th from noon to 1 p.m. at OSF. Kendall discussed what topics will be covered.

“She’s going to be talking about the basics of breast cancer awareness. We as a community and our surrounding counties are very involved in Relay for Life. As we know, cancer touches many in our area,” Kendall said.

Kendall says an increase in younger women being affected by breast cancer has been noticed. Men are also able to develop breast cancer. She urges people to take advantage of “Walk-in Wednesdays” at OSF. From 1-4 p.m. on Wednesdays, anyone can go through a screening mammogram without an appointment.

Kendall also endorsed the facility’s fairly recent addition of 3-D technology used on mammograms.

“It just really gives a clearer picture. Something that women and men don’t think about that if you’re prone to have dense tissue in that area, that actually can be a high risk. So having that screening to at least tell you if your tissue is dense makes you a little more aware when you’re doing those self-screenings in the future,” she said.

Call Kendall at 734-1605 to RSVP for the breast cancer awareness lunch & learn event.
