MONMOUTH, Ill. – Avid water polo fans, and even those who know little about the sport, are in for a treat this weekend when the Monmouth College women’s water polo team hosts an eight-team, 13-game league tournament spanning two days.
Ranked No. 2 in last week’s CWPA Division IIII Varsity poll, the Scots enter the weekend round robin affair with a 3-0 conference mark – their best league start in program history. The weekend’s opening match will be a battle of the top two teams in the polls as Monmouth opens play Saturday morning at 10 facing Macalester – No. 1 in last week’s poll – in a rematch battle of the Scots. Macalester edged Monmouth in the season opener one month ago. Monmouth returns to the pool at 5:30 to meet Penn State Behrend and riding a four-game win streak against the Lions.
It’s an early start for Monmouth Sunday when they open the day’s play with an 8:30 a.m. match looking for their first win against Washington and Jefferson. The Scots close the weekend at 1:30 facing Carthage, a team that clipped Monmouth a month ago to stay unbeaten against the Scots.
Games will run through 7 p.m. Saturday and conclude with Monmouth’s afternoon match on Sunday. Admission is free. For those unable to make it to the games, all matches will be webcast. To view, visit MonmouthScots.com and click on “Webcast” located on the upper right of the main menu bar for a complete list of the weekend’s games.
