Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for April 13th, 2018

Baseball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans took on the Illini West Chargers in a West Central Conference North Division contest. The Titans would prevail 4-2 to move to (7-0) on the season. Nick Corman’s single in the bottom of the 6th inning brought home Rylan Heinrich and Austin Johnson with what proved to be the winning runs. Jordan Cheek got the pitching win, going 6 and 2/3’s innings, giving up only three hits, while striking out five batters.

In other local baseball last night, the United Red Storm fell to ROWVA/Williamsfield 5-1. Avery Leffler had the lone RBI for the Red Storm.

It was Mercer County over West Central 15-1. Matt Belser and Jamison Mills had the lone hits for West Central.

The Abingdon-Avon Tornadoes beat Peoria Quest 15-0. Ryan Adolphson led the Tornado offense, going 3-for-4 with 3 rbis. Dylan Klockenga and Nick Inness had home runs for A-Town as well.

The Knoxville Blue Bullets took advantage of 7 North Fulton fielding errors to defeat the Wildcats in a high-scoring shootout 19-10. Noah Harlan was 3-for-6 for the Blue Bullets.

The Silver Streak baseball team split a pair of games against Rock Island Alleman. The Streaks won game one, 12-2, behind a 3-for-4 day at the plate from Nick Fields. Fields also got the pitching win, going five innings, giving up just three hits and one earned run. He also struck out six Pioneer hitters. Game two didn’t go nearly as well for Galesburg. Alleman gets a 19-6 win.

Softball

Monmouth-Roseville was swept in a double header by Illini West by scores of 21-2 and 23-1. Biancha Luna had a pair of rbi’s for Monmouth-Roseville in the opener.

The United Red Storm got a big 4-3 Lincoln Trail Conference win over ROWVA/Williamsfield. The Red Storm’s Marly Lair had a walk-off single scoring Claire Otting with the winning run in extra innings. Otting blasted a 2-run homer earlier in the game.

West Central fell to Mercer County 11-8 in an LTC game in Aledo. Emily Johnson and Carley Lafary each had three hits for West Central. Johnson knocked in four runs as well.

In Prairieland Conference play, it was A-Town beating Havana 6-3 and Knoxville lost to Farmington 5-4.

The Galesburg Silver Streak softball team also got a split of their double header against Alleman in Rock Island. The Streaks drop game one, 7-0, and then get a 4-2 win in the nightcap. Andrea Sampson had all four rbis in game two for Galesburg. She was 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run.

Junior High

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan Jr. High boys and girls track and field teams hosted a 3-team meet at Sunny Lane Field in Monmouth yesterday. Knoxville and Sherrard also took part in the meet. Both boys teams won their respective divisions, with the girls 7th grade winning and the 8th grade taking 2nd place. Individual winners on the boy’s side for Monmouth-Roseville in the 7th grade group was TJ Blasius in the 200 meter dash, Ashton Toal in the high jump, Jerome Jackson in the long jump and Ethan Davis was a double winner as he placed first in the shot put and discus. Victors for the Titans in the 8th grade boys division was Michael Mendoza in the 110 hurdles, Andrew Gunn in the high jump and Cody Wilcox in the shot put. Joe Rivera was a double winner as well as he took the 800 and 1600 meter races. On the 7th grade girl’s side, Mariah Reading won the 400 meter race and Lily Johnson was a winner in the 100 meter hurdles. In the field events, Chevelle Wolf jumped higher than anybody in the high jump, Susana Gutierrez claimed the shot put with Lexi Finnicum winning the discus toss. Karleigh Ashby and Mirian Gutierrez were 8th grade winners for Monmouth-Roseville. Ashby won the 100 and 200 meter dashes and Gutierrez won the shot put.
