Halfway to Freezing for Food Vital for Area Food Pantries

Share

Halfway to Freezing for Food is back next week from Wednesday, May 30, through Friday, June 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Local community food pantries, Jamieson Center, Roseville Helping Hands, and Operation Backpack, along with over 150 local volunteers, will be outside Save-A-Lot food store collecting non-perishable food items to help fight food insecurity. Nancy Mowen with the Jamieson Center talks about the types of food they are looking for:

“We focus on providing food that has good nutritional quality. The definition of food insecurity is that they don’t have adequate nutrition to support a healthy, active lifestyle. So we want to make sure that the food we are giving them at the pantry helps support that healthy, active lifestyle,” Mowen stated.

Mowen specifically listed a shortage of canned fruits and vegetables, tuna, rice, and even cited a need for toilet paper for the pantries.

The three organizations that take part in this food drive serve approximately 2,000 people throughout the year. An increase in seniors experiencing food insecurity has been noticed in recent months. Mowen knows how important this service is to the community.

“We have some people who just come when they need us, when something unexpected happens. We have some that rely on it every month to supplement what they’ve got coming in,” she said.

Come out to Save-A-Lot, support this great cause, and help fight food insecurity in Warren County.
