Joe Buresh, a retired superintendent from Annawan school district, has just completed his first year as Costa Catholic Academy’s principal. He describes the past year as being outstanding and that a lot of positive changes have been made to improve the school, including increasing mathematics curriculum, promoting a school culture that is conducive to teaching and learning, and improved safety in the building.
Buresh discusses that Costa enrolls 200 students in pre-school through 8th grades and is looking to increase that number to 225 students. To ensure this, the school is already expanding their pre-school, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten classes to two sections of each, in order to prevent putting students on a waiting list. Buresh shares why not putting kids on a waiting list is important:
“Just guarantee them enrollment right from the start. I think it will pay dividends, its best for kids and limit them to 17 kids in a classroom. So we are doing that and it’s research based, the smaller the classroom the better it is for kids in their academic and social skills,” states Buresh.
There are still 10 spots to fill in those new expanded classrooms and Costa is looking to fill those by August 9th.
Buresh briefly highlights that a Catholic high school in the Galesburg/Monmouth area has been in talks and he would like to see one eventually be built. Nothing has been confirmed yet and more will likely come in upcoming months.
Costa Catholic Academy will be holding their 26th Annual Golf Outing on Monday August 13th at Soangetaha Country Club in Galesburg. There will be a shotgun start, beginning at 1pm with a dinner to follow. All proceeds from the event will be used to enhance security at Costa Catholic Academy.
Sponsorship opportunities are still available
The first day of school for the upcoming year will be August 15th. Enrollment is happening now.
