Legion Baseball Tournament Update-Day One

Share

Following an hour rain delay, the Monmouth Legion Post 136 baseball team upset Rock Island Post 200 3-2 in the first round of the District 14 Tournament on the strength of an outstanding pitching performance by recent Monmouth-Roseville High School graduate Nick Corman. Corman, headed to Monmouth College in the fall, pitched a complete game 4-hitter. He struck out 8 batters, while walking only two. After leaving the bases loaded with nobody out in the top of the 2nd, Monmouth pushed across a run in the 3rd. Again with the bases loaded, this time with one out, Nate Bigger drew a walk to force across Corman with the first run of the game. Rock Island tied things up in the 4th on a sacrifice fly by Khyri White. Still tied up at 1-apiece going to the 7th, Monmouth’s Jordon Roller doubled home Brannock McVey with the lead run. Roller would later score on a wild pitch with the eventual winning run. Rock Island rallied in the bottom of the 7th. Sam Mattechek led the inning off with a walk and came around to score on a single by Evan Spurgetis with 2 out. Corman struck out pinch hitter Jesse Linch to end the game and send Monmouth to a winner’s bracket semi-final contest vs. East Moline tonight at 7:15. Rock Island will now play the loser of the Moline/Milan game tomorrow night at 5:00. Moline and Milan will do battle in tonight’s first game at 5. All games of the District 14 tourney are being played at Sherrard High School.

Over at the District 15 Tournament in Canton, Oneida Post 727 led Jerseyville 8-1 in the top of the 6th before rain washed out the rest of that game and the other two games scheduled to be played. The tournament will pick up today from where that game left off.
