Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Aug. 29, 2019

Volleyball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans opened up the home portion of their 2019 schedule by hosting the Mercer County Golden Eagles at the Shoebox at Monmouth-Roseville High School. While the Titans got a win over West Hancock on the road on Monday, last night’s match was the first for the Eagles. In a hotly contested match up that went back and forth all night, the Golden Eagles (1-0) get a 27-25, 25-23 victory. Carly Gillen had 12 kills, four blocks and seven digs to lead Monmouth-Roseville (1-1). Delaney Woodard dished out 22 assists and served for eight points. Ryley Huston had seven digs for the Titans as well. Zoey Miller led Mer Co with six kills. Sheridan Hank totaled ten assists for the Golden Eagles. Monmouth-Roseville will try to get back in the win column with another home match tonight against Knoxville.

Soccer

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan soccer team garnered their second straight shutout to start their season. The Titans blanked the Illini Bluffs/Farmington co-op 4-0 on the strength of two first half goals by Steven Meza. Jovanni Vazquez and Tony Aguilar-Perez netted Monmouth-Roseville’s other two goals. Dylan Corrales posted the shutout in goal as M-R out-shot the hosts 34-3. Now 2-0 on the season, the Titans (2-0) will play three games at the Pekin Invitational this weekend, including a rematch with Illini Bluffs/Farmington.

Macomb beat the Orion/Sherrard 4-0 also. Macomb received goals from Ben LaPrad, Leif Delaney-Bartman, Luke Dobrzycki and Zach Polley.

Golf

The United Red Storm boys and girls earned victories over Elmwood at Baker Park at Maple Lane Country Club in Elmwood. The Red Storm girls won 201-213. Emily Grodjesk’s 47 led all golfers on the day for United. She was joined by Paige McKeown’s 49, Claire Carnes’ 52 and Haley Marshall’s 53. The United boys were victorious 168-212 and were led by Drew Brown’s 37, which was the best score of the day. Evan Wynne was 2nd on the team with a 42. Dyhlan Hepner’s 44 and Caleb Copeland’s 45 played for the Red Storm as well.

Junior High

The ICS Trojan baseball team beat United 15-3 in Alexis. Nick Huston went 3-for-4 for ICS. Also getting multiple hits for the Trojans was Jake Steele, Leo Mahoney, Tyler Jones and David Simmons. Steele rapped out a pair of doubles as well. Seven different ICS batters had at least two rbis. Mahoney accrued ten strikeouts in his four innings on the mound to get the pitching win. Derrick Sargeant, Carter Rothzen and Jacob McElwee had two hits apiece for United. Rothzen also had a double and two rbis for the Red Storm.
