ICC to Hold Policy Session Oct. 1 on Nuclear Energy

Share

The Illinois Commerce Commission will hold a policy session on Tuesday, October 1, to explore the current and future role of nuclear energy. Organized by Commissioner Sadzi Martha Oliva, this is the fourth installment of Illinois’ Power Meter titled: Nuclear Energy: Safety, Research & Development, and Future Sustainability. The discussion will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. in the ICC Main Hearing Room, at the ICC’s Chicago Office located at 160 North LaSalle Street, Ste. C-800.

Illinois has the most nuclear power plants in the United States, which generate 52.2% of the State’s electricity and 88% of its carbon-free electricity.  Also, Illinois has signed the U.S. Climate Alliance, committing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions consistent with targets set in the landmark 2015 Paris climate agreement.

“Understanding the role of nuclear power is timely and necessary because Illinois has the largest number of nuclear power plants in the nation and there is a need for carbon-free energy to meet environmental policy goals.” said Commissioner Oliva. “We look forward to our panel of experts providing key insights on the latest and future developments with nuclear energy, including the impact on decarbonization, current and future nuclear generation, safe disposal of nuclear fuel, and the global demand.”

Panelists for the policy session will include:

  • Maria Korsnick, President & CEO, Nuclear Energy Institute
  • Suzanne Jaworski, Senior Advisor, Office of Nuclear Energy, U.S. Department of Energy
  • Dr. Mitchell Farmer, Program Manager of Light Water Reactor Programs, Nuclear Engineering Division, Argonne National Laboratory
  • Marilyn Kray, Vice President of Nuclear Strategy & Development, Exelon
  • Steve Swilley, Senior Director of Research and Development & Deputy CNO, Electric Power Research Institute
  • Dr. Robert Rosner, Founding Co-Director, Energy Policy Institute, University of Chicago

The formal agenda is forthcoming and will be available here on the ICC website.
