Women’s Soccer
GALESBURG, Illinois – The Prairie Fire women’s soccer team lost to Wartburg College 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The Knights got off to a quick start with a goal in the fourth minute off the foot of sophomore forward Joy Smith. Kate Luers added another goal for Wartburg in the 33rd minute.
The Prairie Fire struggled to defend the Knights attack throughout the first half and were outshot 11-4 during that stretch.
Senior goal keeper Katy Coseglia totaled 10 saves with seven coming in the first half.
After a physical start to the second half, sophomore Emily McParland netted a goal from an Olivia Grierson assist for the Prairie Fire in the 87th minute.
Knox couldn’t cap off a final minute comeback and dropped their first match of the season and moved to 0-1-1.
“We played a tough Wartburg team who presented a lot of challenges to us as a team,” said head coach Taylor Houck. “It was a great learning experience. I’m pleased with how the team responded in the second half to battle and get a goal back. I look forward to seeing how we improve on Wednesday.”
Next up for the Prairie Fire is a matchup at the University of Dubuque on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
Cross Country
ELMHURST, Illinois—The Prairie Fire cross country teams ran their first race of the season on Friday.
Junior Danica Dosmann and senior Cayne Randle led the way for the women’s team. They finished with 69th and 79th finishes, respectively.
First-year Juan Carlos Jimenez led the way for the men’s team with a 24:05 finishing time. He placed 94th overall, and 35th among first-year men. He was followed closely by junior Alex Baker, who finished 98th overall.
“Before the race I told our teams to focus on two things: working hard and having fun. These sentiments will be the foundation of Knox College cross country, and we are off to a good start,” said head coach Adam Flyte. “As the season progresses, and we focus on being more patient, consistent, and honest in our efforts we’ll establish ourselves as a team by working to be better together.”
Knox will take a week off before returning to action at Grinnell on September 14.
