Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 19, 2019

Volleyball

The United Red Storm took the long trip to Annawan for their Lincoln Trail Conference opener. The Storm defeated the Bravettes in straight sets, 25-21, 25-18. Sophomore Josie Bentz continued her strong season at the net, getting nine kills and a block. She also accrued nine digs as well. Riley Tyrrell handed out 11 assists and Kaylee Cornell led the Red Storm with 16 digs. United improves to (9-1), while Annawan falls to (6-3).

The West Central Heat began their LTC slate with a 25-22, 25-15 at home vs. Ridgewood. The (6-4) Heat were led by Mackenzy Ludington’s five kills, Sadie Lenz’s 11 assists and Mady Reed’s four kills and 10 digs. Ridgewood is (4-12) for the season.

Also in the Lincoln Trail Conference last night, it was Mercer County over Wethersfield 25-14, 25-15, Stark County beat Williamsfield 25-18, 25-13 and Princeville had no trouble with Galva, winning 25-11, 25-8.

Elmwood knocked off BPC 25-8, 25-11 and West Prairie defeated North Fulton 25-18, 25-20.

Golf

The United Red Storm girls remained unbeaten at (9-0) in dual matches with a 219-253 win over Galesburg at Lake Bracken Country Club in Galesburg. The Red Storm’s Emily Grodjesk was the meet medalist with a 47. She was joined in the scoring quartet by Claire Carnes’ 55, Paige McKeown’s 57 and Haley Marshall’s 60. Galesburg was led by Kaylee Allen’s 53.
The Macomb Bomber girls golf team went (3-0) vs. Rockridge, QND and Mercer County at their home course of Gold Hills Golf Club in Colchester. The Bomber girls shot a team score of 163. Emma Thorman was the meet medalist with a score of 1-over par 36.

Blaine Sutton’s co-medalist score of 38 led the Macomb boys golf team to a 159-182 win over Burlington at the Burlington Country Club.

Soccer

Steven Meza’s header with 10:33 left in the game lifted the Monmouth-Roseville Titans to a spirited 1-1 tie against the host Macomb Bombers Wednesday night. The Bombers netted their goal with just 1:11 left to play in the first half, as Leif Delay-Barmann intercepted a goal kick, dribbled into the box and beat Corrales from close range. In the hard-fought defensive battle, neither team managed a shot for the first 16 minutes of the second half, when Braxton Lidaywa narrowly missed a header. Overall, the Bombers held a 10-6 advantage in shots, with the Titans firing off two good looks in the final minute of the game. Now 8-5-2 on the year, M-R returns to action Saturday when Princeton comes to Pattee Fields in Monmouth.
